Who are Serious Seeds?

Serious Seeds was founded by Simon, who still helms the business today as their head breeder. Simon's interest in cannabis started late in his life; first, he studied Biology at one of Amsterdam's universities and was never a smoker. He was opposed to smoking due to the association with tobacco & this outlook meant he was excluded from cannabis consumption for a long time due to the social conventions in Netherland (and largely in Europe) are to mix your cannabis with tobacco when rolling a joint or spliff.

It was only after a prolonged study abroad in Africa that he was first able to experience the wonder of pure cannabis without the adulteration of tobacco. Today, it is still scarce for a smoker to consume cannabis without adding tobacco to the mix in Europe on the whole, but especially in the Netherlands, and this association was started with hashish which wouldn't burn without tobacco but unfortunately is still the most promiment mode of consumption.

Early on in the industries history, Simon started to collect seeds and safely stored them in his private genetics library until he returned to Holland and began to grow them out for his consumption and enjoyment. The logical next step was to begin breeding the best and most enjoyable expressions of cannabis that  he found. His networking with other growers allowed him access to a broader selection of plants to select his favourites. This wide selection was a significant advantage in this early era of cannabis breeding to add more variety to the breeding pool, but the  exact genetic lineage of the material wasn't apparent at this time.

Simon was a biology teacher at a local dutch high school until Alan Dronkers, head breeder at Sensi Seeds, decided to approach Simon and asked him to join them at Sensi Seeds. This invitation led to a dramatic career change for Simon, but it was a change he's never looked back from. After time working at Sensi Seeds, Simon partnered up with two American cannabis migrants who had moved to work legally in the industry; they then collectively founded their seed bank.

How did Serious Seeds rise to success?

Very quickly things started to develop rapidly, when in 1994 the Ak-47 and Chronic both won vital prizes at the High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam. However, after his outstanding accomplishments with his strains 'AK-47' and 'Chronic', their collaboration came to a close, and Simon established his seed bank, which he titled 'Serious Seeds' back in 1995. Since the get-go one of Serious Seed's policies was to ensure that they try to have a range of the best coffeeshops in Amsterdam selling products grown from their catalogue. Greenhouse was one of these coffeeshops that carried Serious's products since their conception in 1995. Greenhouse won a High Times Cannabis Cup with the Serious Kaili Mist back in 1995, so soon after they first begun stocking Serious' genetics which showed early the staying power that the brand would have. Shortly after this win, in 1996, De Dampkring coffee shop won the Overall Cannabis cup at that year's edition of the Cannabis Cup with the newest Serious strain: White Russian

Another early stockist of Serious Seed's flower was the Blue Bird, who entered Serious' Warlock strain back in 1997 and was the strain's first introduction to the world of competitive cups, which immediately won an award. Since the very beginning, Serious Seeds has ensured the shops that have their products call the flowers what they are rather than misleading the consumers by white labelling as is commonplace in the industry.

What makes Serious Seeds stand out from the crowd?

Serious has always been a small company that likes to test and work properly their lines rather than pollen chucking and coming up with a new hyped name every few months; that's what gives them the name Serious as they know this industry doesn't deserve childish games! Part and parcel of ensuring that everything has been appropriately tested means that the Serious Genetic catalogue is small but quality focussed as they don't wish to release anything not worthy of the Serious name. This is key to the integrity of Serious Seeds, they will only release a strain when they are delighted with its properties and their stability and uniformity.

Serious Seeds also likes to give back to the community take important feedback from them when testing a new variety, this means when they produce a new limited strain they give away test seeds to their customers with their purchases at various fairs such as Spannabis and they will then recieve feedback and grow diaries back via email. Only once they are sure that everyone is satisfied will they then release those SERIOUSLY LIMITED strains.

Moreover, they frequently improve their existing strains through better selections, and when they release a new version, they keep the same name rather than needlessly hyping it up. This is because they don't want their brand's product list to increase endlessly with similar genetics and instead would prefer to keep new names for brand-new genetic varieties.

As such, all Serious Seeds packets are individually numbered and produced in small batches to ensure quality control. This is why Serious Seeds guarantees every packet of authentic Serious Seeds, so if they don't germinate and they are verified as authentic seeds then Serious will be sure to replace them.
